of the FLOWERS

A journey of history, innovation and meaning

By Cristina Ocaña and Karen Silva

Since time immemorial, flowers have been a symbol of beauty, elegance and sophistication, accompanying and decorating our lives. With their vibrant colors and delicate fragrance, they have the unique ability to transform any space, bringing a touch of freshness and vitality. In the world of high standing interior design, a well-chosen floral arrangement not only beautifies, but also communicates a sense of style and attention to detail.

Imagine a banquet in ancient Rome, where flowers adorned every table and corner, reflecting the power and wealth of the host. Or think of the magnificent halls of the French or English court, a scene worthy of "Bridgerton," with elegant balls and flower-filled halls reflecting the splendor of the nobility. For centuries, they have been an integral part of celebrations and ceremonies, communicating feelings that words often could not express.

Today, flowers have also conquered other areas: in haute cuisine, with violets and marigolds enhancing gourmet dishes; in cosmetics, enriching luxury products; and in fashion, where great designers use them to bring freshness and sophistication to their collections.

Beyond traditional decoration

In the Victorian era, "floriography," or the language of flowers, became a sophisticated means of conveying secret messages. A bouquet of red roses was an explicit declaration of passionate love. Each flower, color and arrangement had a specific meaning, capable of expressing feelings that words often failed to capture.

Flowers have also been associated with health and well-being. Modern research shows that being surrounded by them can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels, improving our overall well-being. Vibrant colors and calming fragrances activate pleasure centers in the brain. In addition, species such as daisies and peace lilies can purify indoor air, improving the quality of the home environment.

Receiving flowers not only brightens up any space, but also has a powerful effect on our emotions. In 2005, a study conducted by the University of New Jersey compared how people reacted to receiving a candle, a basket of fruit, or a bouquet of flowers, all with the same economic value. The result was clear: 100% of those who received flowers smiled instantly, and their good mood lasted, especially when they placed them in shared spaces. In contrast, only 77% of those who received a candle and 90% of those who received a fruit basket experienced the same immediate joy.

Surrounding yourself with flowers and plants has a real and profound impact on how we feel and we feel and perform, both at home and at work.

But the benefits don't end there. A Harvard study concluded that having flowers in the home directly improves overall well-being, filling the personal environment with calm and positivity. Science backs it up: Chungman National University in South Korea recently published a study on the psychological and physiological effects of using natural flowers, revealing that they not only beautify, but also reduce anxiety and promote relaxation more effectively than artificial flowers.

Even in the workplace, flowers make a difference. A Washington State University study showed that adding plants to a windowless workspace increased productivity by 12%, and employees felt more focused and attentive. It's clear: surrounding ourselves with flowers and plants has a real and profound impact on how we feel and perform, both at home and at work.

Current trends

With this deep connection between flowers and wellness, it's no wonder that one of this year's most prominent floral trends in flower arranging is the "Nature Connection," which seeks to bring the outdoors indoors with earthy colors like brown, yellow and salmon, combined with dark greens and grays. Using natural materials such as coconut shells and houseplants, an atmosphere is created that evokes the serenity of the natural world.

Another notable trend is "Viva la vida", where vibrant colors such as red, magenta, yellow and orange create bold and dramatic compositions. Tropical flowers such as birds of paradise and orchids bring energy and joy to the arrangements.

Also, oversized arrangements, featuring hydrangeas and amaranths, are gaining popularity, creating visual impact and a sense of opulence. These trends demonstrate how floral arrangements can enrich our spaces and convey emotions in unique and creative ways.

In every petal and every scent, flowers remind us of the ephemeral beauty of life and the importance of enjoying the small pleasures of everyday life.

Floral art in the capital

Madrid, known for its rich cultural tradition and love of aesthetics, is home to some of the most exclusive flower shops in Europe. Walking through the most emblematic neighborhoods of the capital, you can find true gems that tell stories through their innovative designs.

In the elegant Salamanca neighborhood, florists such as Búcaro and Naranjas de la China stand out, offering unique arrangements. Margarita se llama mi amor, in Justicia, has earned its reputation thanks to compositions that defy convention. In Chamberí we find Bourguignon, with more than 80 years of history and Brumalis. In El Viso, Alfabia and Moss Floristas are recognized for their exquisite proposals. In addition, Sally Hambleton is another reference in the floral world of Madrid, known for its distinctive and exclusive style.

An emerging trend in big cities is the fusion of coffee shops and flower shops. Spaces like "Salón des Fleurs" in Madrid allow you to enjoy an exquisite coffee surrounded by floral arrangements. In addition, many of these establishments allow customers to take small bouquets of flowers along with their coffee, combining two everyday pleasures in a single visit.

Beyond beautifying our spaces and events, flowers teach us about the importance of connecting with nature, expressing emotions and celebrating life in all its forms. In every petal and every scent, flowers remind us of the ephemeral beauty of life and the importance of enjoying the small everyday pleasures.
