Rupert’s trip to APAC
January saw a short stint in Hong Kong where Thomas Lam, Head of APAC Valuation & Advisory, organised a packed itinerary for two action packed and a half days which included a presentation to his team in HK and to clients including Citi, Goldin and Sun Hung Kai Properties. It was also good to meet up with Colin Tang, who some years ago worked in London with European Valuations, and now working with Thomas. I shall not forget a dinner at The China Club in the Old China Bank Building courtesy of Thomas and then with Paul Hart (Head of Capital Markets) at The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, also with Piers Brunner, Head of the Hong Kong office. A shortish flight to Singapore (my first trip there) and within three hours of landing, presenting ... to around 100 clients. Kin Hon Low, Head of Valuation & Advisory, organised an action packed two days with presentations to clients including M&G, City Developments, UOL Group, Allgreen Properties and Far East Organisation, with a beer at the famous Raffles Bar and dinner with some of Kin Hon’s team.
And at the end of February a trip to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, organised by Michael Schuh (Melbourne) and hosted by Michael and Al Carpenter (Head of Australia Valuation & Advisory). Just in the nick of time with Covid-19 growing rapidly by the day. Meetings included interviewing for a Head of Best Practice and client meetings with Brookfield, Cromwell, Kepell REIT, Mapletree, M&G, Frasers, CapitaLand, AMP, Goodman and QIC in Brisbane. I also met up with 3 staff who used to work in the London Valuation team, now all working in Australia - Andy Nichols now at AustralianSuper; Charlotte Conyers now with PWC; and Donna Wright now in Knight Frank’s Brisbane office. Dinner with the Valuation Group from offices all around Australia, dinner at The Australia Club with Goodman’s Head of Valuation, Alex Martin, and hosted by Al Carpenter. What a week, and not a minute to spare before a late flight return to the UK and the onslaught of COVID-19 and material uncertainty clauses. I was blown away by the professionalism and warm welcome from all those I visited, who worked so hard to introduce me to their offices, their teams, their clients and just a little of their wonderful cultures. Thank you so much to you all. Rupert
